Moonlight shone through the partially opened curtains and invested the room with enchantment. Slowly, gently they explored each other and rediscovered delight. When Matt eased inside Laura, finally and irrevocably, he felt as though he was coming home. This was where he should be. It transcended anything he had experienced before and went far beyond physical need. This was as essential as breathing.

They swept towards the climax together, caught up in a tide of indescribable sensation: completely new, yet as ancient as time; so sharp in intensity it was almost painful and yet so loving and sweet.

There were no words, Matt decided. He had never, ever, felt so united with another being. He turned to look at Laura who was lying with her eyes closed, her breasts rising and falling as she sought to regain her breath. He knew he wanted to have her by his side for the rest of his life. He wanted her as his wife.

Suddenly all his plans about introducing her gradually to his life so that she would not be frightened away seemed stupid. What was fundamental was the fact that they loved each other and wanted to be together. They could work from there.

He raised himself up on one elbow and started tracing his fingers over her face until her eyes opened and she smiled at him and mouthed, “I love you.” Her fingers spelled the words on his skin.

He felt the jolt again. She only had to smile at him and he was felled. His eyes grow moist. He felt compelled to tell her how much she meant to him. Sod his previous intentions. He was going to ask her to marry him. “Laura, I love you so much. I want you.”

He never finished what he was going to say: what he was going to ask. His phone rang.
